Installing Firefox on Windows
Download the setup file to your computer. It is recommended that you exit all your other running programs. Double-click the file to start the Firefox install wizard.
* (Windows Vista) You may see a User Account Control message. In this case, allow the setup to run by clicking Continue.
You will be greeted with a welcome screen. Click Next to continue. This will bring you to the Setup Type screen. A Standard setup is selected by default, which will install Firefox with a recommended configuration that will work for most users.
* Check Use Firefox as my default browser if you want use Firefox when you open a link in your mail application, an Internet shortcut, or HTML document.
Click Next.
Once the installation is complete, close the setup wizard by clicking Finish.
If the “Launch Firefox now” checkbox is checked, Mozila Firefox will start for the first time immediately after you click Finish.
Congratulations, you are done installing Firefox!
Installing Firefox on Mac
Visit the Firefox for Mac in any browser (e.g. Apple Safari). It will automatically detect the platform and language on your computer and recommend the best edition(s) of Mozila Firefox for you. If you want to download another edition of Mozila Firefox, click on “Other Systems and Languages” to see a list of all the others available.
Download the disk image (dmg file) to your desktop. Once the download has completed, the disk image may open by itself and mount a new volume which contains the Firefox application. If you do not see the new volume, double-click the Mozila Firefox dmg icon to open it.
A Finder window appears, containing the Mozila Firefox application. Drag the Firefox Icon into the Applications folder.
After Mozila Firefox has been dragged into the Applications folder you can eject the disk image by selecting it in a Finder window and pressing the Cmd+E keys or by using the Finder’s File menu, and selecting Eject as shown below.
* If you find that the Firefox disk image will not eject, it is probably because of a Leopard bug, that prevents disk ejection, after you’ve copied files from one drive to another. Ejecting the disk via the Disk Utility should still work.
Firefox is now ready for use. Open the Applications folder and double-click on Firefox to start it.
* (Leopard) If you’re using Leopard, you will be warned that you downloaded Firefox from the internet. Because you download Firefox from the official site, you can click Open.
When you first start up Firefox, it will not be your default browser and you’ll be told about that. That means that when you open a link in your mail application, an Internet shortcut, or HTML document, it will not open in Firefox. If you want Firefox to do the above, click Yes to set it as your default browser. If not or you are just trying out Firefox, click No.
Installing Firefox on Linux
Download Firefox for Linux
1. Download Firefox from the Firefox download page to your home directory.
2. Open a Terminal and go to your home directory:
cd ~
3. Extract the contents of the downloaded file:
tar xjf firefox-*.tar.bz2
4. Close Firefox if it’s open.
5. To start Firefox, run the firefox script in the firefox folder.
~/firefox/firefox
Firefox should now start. You can then create an icon on your desktop to run this command.
libstdc++5 error
As noted above, you need to install the required libraries for Firefox to work. Many distributions don’t include libstdc++5 by default.
“firefox not installed” message or wrong version of Firefox starts
You must start Firefox with the command
~/firefox/firefox
If you try to start Firefox with the command
firefox
it will either start the package-manager-installed version of Firefox or will tell you the program is not installed.
